We know that work life balance is important, but are we ensuring that we look for it when searching for a job?
- Two thirds of UK employees (66%) feel that work-life balance is a crucial consideration when applying for a job.
- More than half (55%) of employees want to work for a company who will actively support their mental health. This percentage has doubled in the last 10 years.
- Half of all employees will expect employers to offer some form of remote work in a job offer.
- People between the ages of 24 to 44 years-old are twice as likely to prioritise work-life-balance over salary, than 18 to 24 year-olds – telling us that work-life balance becomes more important to us as we get older.
- 50% of all employees who switched jobs in 2002, did so to achieve a better work life balance.
How does work-life balance rank among most desirable job factors?
According to research from Lenovo and Cebr, in 2012, work life balance was ranked as the 8th most important factor to candidates when looking for a job. Today, work life balance is voted as the number 1 factor to job searching candidates.
A similar survey from CIPHR found that work-life balance was the number one factor to job seekers, with the following aspects ranking in the top 10.

UK employees work an average of 42.0 hours per week. This is the highest weekly average in Europe which has an average work week consisting of 40.2 hours (2.2 hours less).

- Night shift workers are 33% more likely to suffer depression than those working a regular 9-5 work pattern.
Are UK employees suffering from burnout?
Burnout is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion, caused by working in a physically or emotionally draining role for long periods of time.

- 63% of commuters who have a spend less than 30 minutes commuting per day, say that they are happy with their work life balance.
- Only one third of employees who commute for over 2 hours per day are happy with their work life balance.
- The average UK worker commutes for 30 – 45 minutes per day.
What benefits do UK employees want?
What do UK staff value most in work perks, and are employers meeting their demands?
- CIPD research tells us that only 41% of UK workers are happy with their benefits package.
- A recent survey from Bionic shows that flexible working is the most sought-after employee perk in the UK with 51% of people requiring it from a new job.
- In accordance with the above, 4 in 5 (82%) of employers believe offering employees flexibility in where and when they work is essential in attracting and retaining talent.
- Throughout 2022, 4.3 million employees in the UK had flexible working hours in their work contract.
- A cycle-to-work-scheme (which offers discounts on bicycle purchases) is the least desired job perk, with only 4% of employees seeking it.
