Although you’re about to enter the unchartered waters of job hunting, here are a few tips to help you navigate your way:

Start this new journey with a positive, confident mindset. Remember, just because you may not have direct work experience - it does not mean that you have no skills. Your lack of experience is actually your strength. Your super trainable! Managers love being able to mould their employees’ working styles and building their skill set as per their preferences. They will not have to figure out what kind of management style works with you. Instead, they can develop your skill set as per the role’s requirements.

Review Your Skill Set

Speaking of skills…

This is the time for you think have a think about what you are great at. Do you have a knack for being organised? Maybe an admin job is perfect for you. Were you the main driving force behind your university group projects and events? Clearly, coordination is your forte. A career in event planning could be calling your name.

Here are some key skills that you can add to your resume:

  • Communication
  • Customer Service
  • Teamwork
  • Multi-tasking
  • Organisational skills

Whip up a Strong CV

Now that you have your list of skills sorted, it’s time to create your CV!

This is your professional snapshot that will convince your hiring manager why you’re the best person for the job. Studies have reflected that recruiters spend an average of six seconds on every profile. This is your window to impress them! Keep it short and sweet by including your name/contact details, your credentials, your skill set and any projects that you’ve previously worked on. Try to customise your profile to the individual job that you’re applying for.

In today’s day and age, recruiters use multiple applicant tracking systems that scan resumes for certain keywords for short-listing purposes. Follow a simple CV format and use specific keywords (such as skills mentioned in the job advertisement) to ensure that your profile gets chosen.

Another little tip: always, always and always remember to review your resume for spelling, grammar and punctuation!
